Electric motors as standard
equipment
A brief description of the principle
involved
• Complete installation is composed of two electric motors
connected to propellers by straight shaft transmissions, one
generator and two set of 6 batteries.
• When batteries are 100 % charged, the boat will be able to
function with both motors
for approximately two hours (depending on speed). When
batteries are 80 % charged, the generator will automatically
start and charge the batteries and provide electricity for
the motors.
• When sailing, propellers will turn freely and charge the
batteries.
Advantages
• A modern, forward-looking solution;
• A clean and ecological system: low fuel consumption,
little carbon dioxide emission;
• Runs in silence;
• Only one fuel engine to maintain;
• Electric motors are maintenance free;
• Energy savings: the generator provides electricity for the
motors, the batteries and
the daily boat needs (air condition, power sockets, washing
machine, etc.).
The system includes
• Two 10 kW electric motors, each one driving a shaft
mounted propeller. These motors are fed by two banks of
batteries. Under sail, they recharge the batteries via the
rotation of the propellers.
• A 11 kVA - 50Hz - 220V generator or 13,5 kVA - 60Hz 110V
• A 220 / 72V charger / converter to feed the motors and /
or charge the batteries;
• Two large banks of six batteries each.
Range of the motors
• When the batteries are fully charged, the boat can motor
for about 2 hours depending on speed on the batteries alone.
• At 80 % of the batteries capacity, the generator starts
automatically to recharge the batteries.
Under sail
• The propellers are driven by the speed of the boat and
recharge the batteries, this is called regeneration.
• A modern and futuristic
solution: the use of the hybrid propulsion system is growing
rapidly in the automotive industry;
• Clean and green: low energy consumption and CO2 emission;
• Silent propulsion;
• Only one diesel engine to service (the generator)
• The electric motors do not require any maintenance;
• Energy savings: the generator supplies the energy required
by the motors, the batteries and the boat equipments
(electric sockets, air-conditioning, washing-machine, etc.)
for a consumption two to four times lower than that of
conventional diesel engines.
