SAVARONA's HISTORY IN BRIEF

  • She was built in Hamburg in 1931 for Emily Roebling Cadwallader, grand daughter of John Roebling the engineer who built the Brooklyn Bridge at a cost of 4 million US dollars.

  • In 1938 she was sold to the Turkish Government for 1.2 million US dollars and was used as a presidential yacht by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk only for a few months because he died the same year.

  • The yacht stayed moored on the Bosphorus until 1951 and then became a training ship for officers of the Turkish Navy.

  • She was badly damaged by a fire in October 1979.

  • In 1989 the businessman Kahraman Sadikoglu leased the yacht for 49 years from the Government. He spend 3 years and 25 million dollars to renovate and refurbish her. Her steam turbines were removed and a modern diesel propulsion system was installed, interior was styled by the famous designer Donald Starkey, tons of fine marble was used and so on. After her restoration, Savarona started her glorious days again and since then she has been chartered around the globe.

  • She was refitted in 1999 to meet latest international and luxury standards.
